What.. you don't like to relax on the treadmill?

She thought she was super smart for coming up with this idea.. so proud of herself, ha ha ha!

On Monday we joined some friends at the Lost River Cave a couple hours west of here. It was crazy hot, but C had so much fun. She thought going in a cave was very cool. Part of the tour was a boat ride through a cave and after emerging she wanted to go again. It was a neat little tour and I enjoyed learning some history about the area. I especially thought it was neat to learn that the little swimming hole surrounded by caves and cliffs we called "devil's hole" when I was a teenager (named such because it seemed to be bottomless) is basically the same thing as this place. I wish I had taken some decent pics but it was just too complicated in 96 degree heat, trying to keep up with a 3-yr-old, and realizing that taking pics of a cave is not that easy. So, if you want to learn more, check out their site: http://www.lostrivercave.com/

We were thrilled to wake up to RAIN today. I have been wanting a rainy day for a while now and we finally got it. Maybe all the brown patches in the grass can green back up a bit. It has just been so miserably hot and humid here. Thank goodness for a brief break today. And hopefully our few little veggies will enjoy nature's best drink.

Speaking of which, our first little gardening experiment hasn't gone all that great yet. Really, the two veggies we were most looking forward to: zucchini and yellow squash, did horribly. And I say "did," past tense, because they are gone. Finished. They grew absolutely beautifully the first four weeks and we were really enjoying watching them grow. Then suddenly they just started looking bad. We weren't sure what was going on. I suspected bugs or fungus. He suspected the heat and the dryness of the bed we planted them in. After yanking the miserably wilted and dead plant we saw an unbelievable amount of squash borers up in the stalk. Ewwww! The very thing I was worried about happened. Yuck yuck yuck. They were literally eating and killing the plants from the inside out. Sigh.... I guess I'll plant some flowers or something in there.

On a positive note, we had our first "harvest" for a meal today. Our basil is growing well and I went out at lunchtime (in the rain!) to gather some. I made pesto for the first time and we had chicken and pasta in pesto sauce. C was a little hesitant at first, but after she tried it, she said, "yummy! that's good sauce!" We all agreed.

Umm.. what else... C has a new favorite movie: Ponyo. And I have to say, I am really glad a friend recommended this movie to me. We were discussing our dislike of so many movies with their heavy emphasis on "evil" and cruel characters. She told me of Ponyo and I went home and added it to our Netflix. Even the characters who seem slightly on the scary side really weren't. It was a very positive and uplifting movie. We all enjoyed watching it today and are looking forward to discovering more movies from the maker of this one, Hayao Miyazaki.
